Joyful Reminder

20 Feb

This is the day that the Lord have made.  I will rejoice and be glad in it.

Great old hymn.

Live it.  Be extremely grateful for all that you have and don’t make your whole goal chasing after what won’t bring you anymore happiness anyway.

Praise our Lord.

    Psalm 118 – ESV

    1 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
    2 Let Israel say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
    3 Let the house of Aaron say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
    4 Let those who fear the LORD say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
    5 Out of my distress I called on the LORD;
    the LORD answered me and set me free.
    6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear.
    What can man do to me?
    7 The LORD is on my side as my helper;
    I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
    8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD
    than to trust in man.
    9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD
    than to trust in princes.
    10 All nations surrounded me;
    in the name of the LORD I cut them off!
    11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
    in the name of the LORD I cut them off!
    12 They surrounded me like bees;
    they went out like a fire among thorns;
    in the name of the LORD I cut them off!
    13 I was pushed hard,a so that I was falling,
    but the LORD helped me.
    14 The LORD is my strength and my song;
    he has become my salvation.
    15 Glad songs of salvation
    are in the tents of the righteous:
    “The right hand of the LORD does valiantly,
    16 the right hand of the LORD exalts,
    the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!”
    17 I shall not die, but I shall live,
    and recount the deeds of the LORD.
    18 The LORD has disciplined me severely,
    but he has not given me over to death.
    19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
    that I may enter through them
    and give thanks to the LORD.
    20 This is the gate of the LORD;
    the righteous shall enter through it.
    21 I thank you that you have answered me
    and have become my salvation.
    22 The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.b
    23 This is the LORD’s doing;
    it is marvelous in our eyes.
    24 This is the day that the LORD has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.
    25 Save us, we pray, O LORD!
    O LORD, we pray, give us success!
    26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!
    We bless you from the house of the LORD.
    27 The LORD is God,
    and he has made his light to shine upon us.
    Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
    up to the horns of the altar!
    28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
    you are my God; I will extol you.
    29 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

    Hebrews 4 – ESV

    1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.
    2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.
    3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,
    “As I swore in my wrath,
    ‘They shall not enter my rest,’”
    although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.
    4 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”
    5 And again in this passage he said,
    “They shall not enter my rest.”
    6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience,
    7 again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,
    “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your
    hearts.”
    8 For if Joshua had given them rest, Godb would not have spoken of another day later on.
    9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,
    10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
    11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
    12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
    13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
    14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
    15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
    16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

    I always find myself connecting the first thought (song), “This is the day…” with the second thought, how in Christ, God has provided a Sabbath rest for His people (any one whom the Lord shall call and who hears and obeys by accepting and receiving what He has provided). I have to stop myself, usually several times a week, and ask myself, “Now Clint, are you “resting” in Him, in His atoning work, His saving grace, and are you worshiping Him for it?” In Hebrews 3 and 4, the writer talks about the seriousness of missing “God’s rest”, Jesus Christ. Fortunately for us, our God is way more faithful and devoted than we are. He constantly and continually works towards completing our salvation. Praise Him! 🙂
